Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.
He remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, excited about the potential of the organization, and look forward following their progress".
The former Harvard president, who formerly led Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed messages showed that the official communicated with the financier until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood his choice to step down.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the insight he brought to the governing body," the organization remarked.
Congressional Action
This announcement arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to endorse a legislation that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its documents on the case.
The legislation will subsequently move to the office of US President Donald Trump for signature. The President has said he intends to sign the bill, after changing his stance on the matter following pushback from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of financier-linked messages made public by the legislative panel recently included numerous high-profile figures in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.
The emails showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often seeking to connect Summers to influential world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were released with the wider community, Summers stated he assumed "total ownership for my misguided choice to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he desired "to restore trust and mend connections with the people most important to me".
Previous Positions
The economist served in senior posts under party leaders; acting as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under the former leader.
He headed Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and remains a academic there. When stating his step-down from public roles previously on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Further Repercussions
Following the economist's announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in the capital where he was a prominent member, announced that the economist was no longer connected with the group.
He entered the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the language model, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
